Spotlight on: Lion’s Mane Mushroom

The health benefits really are endless, as we covered in Top 5 Medicinal Mushrooms. And, as there is so much to be said about each one, we have decided to put a few under the spotlight, so you can really get to know them. Starting today, with Lion’s Mane Mushroom.

What does it look like?

Native to Southeast Asia, Europe and North America, it grows hanging off trees and logs. It is known in Japan as yamabushitake which means ‘those who sleep in the mountains’, in reference to Shugendo monks who wear long flowing white robes. Elsewhere however, it takes its name from the ‘King of the Jungle’ (does anybody know lions actually live on the savanna?!) due to its shaggy appearance. A bit like a lost anemone growing on land, it definitely doesn’t resemble the cute ‘lil toadstool you’re used to.

So now we know it looks freaky. But what can it do?

Powers and Supports the Brain

As you age, your brain naturally slows down. The common perception of becoming forgetful with age stems from the very real process of neurons shrinking and cells sustaining damage over time. However, studies reveal that Lion’s Mane addresses this issue in two distinct ways.

First, Lion’s Mane boosts Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), which your body needs to protect and regenerate brain neurons. Second, it enhances the production of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). This not only strengthens neurons but also improves brain plasticity, helping to counteract the effects of aging.

In the past, it was believed that the number of brain cells you had as a child was fixed for life. Fortunately, research on Lion’s Mane has shown that this is not the case!

Combats Neurodegenerative Disease

The brain-regenerative properties of Lion’s Mane make it a promising candidate for treating neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Research on rodents has shown that Lion’s Mane extract can help protect against memory loss and involuntary movements—symptoms commonly associated with these conditions. Additionally, an early human study, conducted as a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with 15 older adults, demonstrated that Lion’s Mane significantly improved cognitive function.

Improved Mood and Focus

Research has shown that Lion’s Mane extract can positively impact mood. Both animal studies and preliminary human trials have found that taking the extract reduced depressive symptoms. This effect is likely linked to Lion’s Mane’s anti-inflammatory properties, as chronic inflammation is a known contributor to mood disorders like depression and anxiety. Additionally, reduced inflammation enhances blood flow to the brain, boosting overall cognitive function.

Anecdotal evidence from Lion’s Mane users further supports these findings. On platforms like Reddit, users frequently report improved focus and a reduction in "brain fog." This enhanced mental clarity, along with better memory and decision-making skills, is likely attributed to Lion’s Mane’s ability to promote neuroplasticity.

How to take Lion’s Mane

Lion’s Mane mushroom is, unlike quite a lot of medicinal mushrooms, actually edible. It can be cooked, dried, eaten raw or steeped in tea. The flavour is apparently seafood-esque and can be enjoyable. However, if you don’t want a lobster flavour cuppa, it is easy to get hold of as a supplement or tincture. However, it is always good to research the product before buying to check the active compound to filler ratio.

We hope this has taught you all you need to know about this muppet-esque ‘shroom. And, as always, we recommend you consult your doctor before making any changes to your health routine.
